"free," 16세기부터 영어에서 다양한 조합으로 사용된 프랑스어 단어, 프랑스어 libre에서 유래, 라틴어 liber "free"에서 유래 (참조 liberal (형용사)).

고대 영어 후기, "시를 만들다," 15세기 중반, 타동사, "시로 표현하다 또는 이야기하다;" verse (명사)에서 유래. well-versed (15세기 중반)는 "우아한 시로 표현하다"라는 의미였다. verse (동사)와 비교.

But it is possible that excessive devotion to rhyme has thickened the modern ear. The rejection of rhyme is not a leap at facility; on the contrary, it imposes a much severer strain upon the language. 하지만 지나치게 운율에 집착하면 현대인의 귀가 둔해질 수 있다. 운율을 거부하는 것은 단순히 편리함을 추구하는 것이 아니다. 오히려 이는 언어에 훨씬 더 엄격한 부담을 준다. 운율의 안락한 메아리가 사라지면, 단어 선택, 문장 구조, 배열에서의 성공이나 실패가 즉시 더 뚜렷해진다. 운율이 사라지면, 시인은 곧 산문의 기준에 의해 평가받게 된다. 운율이 없어진 순간, 많은 천상의 음악이 단어에서 솟아오른다. 그 음악은 지금까지 산문의 광활함 속에서 주목받지 못하고 속삭였던 것이다.
